Broward County History
Broward County, the second most populated County in the state of Florida is located in the southeast part of the state. Fort Lauderdale is the County seat and is where the main courthouse is situated. The County is also the 18th most populous county in the United States. History
The state of Florida created Broward County in 1915 and named it after Napoleon Bonaparte Broward who was the governor of Florida from 1905 to 1909. Interestingly, the original name was intended to be Everglades County, but to then speaker of the House of Representatives, Ion Farris was able to amend the bill so that the County was named after the former governor. Ever since it began Broward County was considered a leader in agricultural products and services with the state of Florida. With the advent of World War II the region was transformed as a result of the war buildup. Geography and Demographics
Broward County has an average elevation of 6 feet above sea level. It’s most prominent geographical features are its beautiful beaches on its East Coast and the extensive Everglades National Park in the Western part of the County. It is among the last areas of Florida to be created and populated with plants and animals. The County has a total area of 1319.63 square miles. The County is fairly densely populated with most of the developable land already built out. According to the 2000 census, the population of the county was 1,623,018 people. An interesting ethnic note is that Broward County is the only county in the nation outside of the Northeast in which the Italian-Americans formed the largest ethnic group according to the 2000 census. The median income for a household in Broward County was $41,691.
The Broward County main courthouse with its Circuit and County courts is located in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
