History of Martin County
Stuart Florida, the County seat of Martin County, is located on Florida’s East Coast and borders the St. Lucie River. The first settlers came to Stuart in 1870 and Stuart was incorporated in 1914. History
“Downtown Stuart” was originally owned by the Stypman brothers who were large landowners. They were early pineapple farmers made their fortune in the area. The name was changed from Potsdam to Stuart (after another settler) after the FEC railroad made its way through Martin County. Stewart’s population is 17,285 and increases to 21,087 with winter visitors. Stuart lies in the area of southeast Florida as the treasure Coast, which derives its name from the 18th century one several Spanish galleons were shipwrecked in the Martin County area of Florida’s treasure Coast. The multiple ship wrecks were reportedly the result of a hurricane of the ships were carrying unknown quantities of gold and silver.
