The early settlers of West Palm Beach settled in the area in the late 1870s and 1880s and called the vicinity “Lake Worth Country.” The early economy of the area was primarily agricultural with crops such as tropical fruits and vegetables. The product of these crops was shipped of North via Lake Worth and Indian River. Henry Flagler, early settler, platted the city. The original townsite was bought by Mr. Flagler for $45,000. In addition to the winter vegetable market, many residents were engaged in the tourist industry. West Palm Beach became the county seat of Palm Beach County in 1909. The first courthouse was opened in 1916 and it has been restored to its original condition and is used as a local history museum.
